5 QUOTES:
1. 'The power comes, weirdly, from simply asking myself these questions....' This quote confused me, but I think it's significant because it shows curiosity. It foreshadows how the main character, Claire, is confused and wondering things throughout this entire novel.
2. 'Complete happiness can feel so much like complete terror that it's hard to tell them apart.' This quote is important to the book because it shows how good and bad things are related. There has been a lot of good and a lot of bad in Claire's life, and in other characters' lives. But the two are similar in this story.
3. 'You gotta pay your dues to sing the blues.' This quote reveals how bad things can come out good through music or other forms of self-expression. It's like method acting, but with music. Clare's friend, Ellen, says to put the energy of her traumatic experienced into her music, to improve it. This theory actually works, toward the end when Claire becomes a member of a band.
4. 'If a life goes down the toilet, it comes out in a river to meet the sea.' There have been many quotes in this book, so far, about bad and good being related. I first interoperated this quote as saying that other people with bad lives gone down the toilet are together, meeting in a big sea or something. But when I read it again I thought about how Claire isn't alone, and it's kind of a 'when life gives you lemons, make lemonade' type quote. Because the toilet is obviously the bad, lemon part, and the lemonade part is coming out in a peaceful river into a nice ocean.
5. 'Silence. No further message from God.' This quote shows the confusion and blankness and lack of answers that Claire feels throughout the story. The main character is faced with constant questions and difficult journeys, and she is usually confused and in need of answers. And because.

I really liked Carol Plum-Ucci's "What Happened to Lani Garver.

And I know that I'm not the best artist or drawer, but I also made a bookcover for this book which includes certain elements that I found significant. In the picture, there is Lani, in his angel costume. There is also an electric guitar, a razor, the present from Razor Backs, a ring, and Vince's car. Each item is drawn in black and white, with a colored background. The distinction of color and black/white represents Claire's state of confusion throughout this book.
